  • Is Anybody There? Does Anybody Care?

Is Anybody There? Does Anybody Care?

Your church is dying! Should you just give up and close the doors?

Dr. Robert LaRochelle thinks there are more answers and more options. In this book, he draws from a lifetime of experience as a teacher, pastor, counselor, and writer to offer ideas and strategies to make the church a caring presence in your community and to revive and sustain what many may have regarded as a dying church.

From worship to Christian education, from the elderly members to the youngest, and with consideration and concern from multiple denominations and communities, Dr. LaRochelle builds a case for a continuing caring presence of the church in our communities.

This book will be encouraging to those who seek new strategies to meet the changing needs of their 21st century congregations. With that encouragement, it will provide practical advice. If a church must close, it will help congregants work together to continue in their work of sharing, ministry, and service to one another and to their community.

This book is designed for anyone who is interested in keeping the ministry of the many churches in America alive and helping them grow and change. Church leaders and pastors will be especially blessed.

  • Jesus’ Journey to the Cross

    Jesus’ Journey to the Cross

Discussions of Jesus’ words and actions as he went to the cross are fairly common. What about the other players? How do their reactions connect to the critical, final action of Jesus?

Dr. William Powell Tuck, who has previously written about the centrality of the cross in Christian faith (The Church Under the Cross), and the last words of Jesus (The Last Words from the Cross), takes a look at the reaction of others who were involved, leading up to the final cry of Jesus, “It is finished!” In doing so, Dr. Tuck leads us to questions of how we respond to Jesus personally, and especially to the meaning of this central event of Christianity.

It is easy for us to think about the resurrection and to speak of the joy, strength, and triumph that it portrays. But we lose the depth and breadth of the resurrection when we fail to look at these scenes from the journey Jesus took to the cross itself. Our response to strength, glory, and triumph is less a demonstration of who we are than our response to trials and apparent tragedy.

In this book you will learn to look at different perspectives on that difficult time, as people react to events they do not understand. How can we learn to respond better to the situations that our lives present to us?

This book is suitable for individual reading, and would also make an excellent study for a small group. While it would be particularly valuable as a Lenten study, mediation on the cross is valuable at any time of the year.

  • Just a Little Walk with Jesus

Just a Little Walk with Jesus

Embark on a forty-one-day holy adventure whose impact will last a lifetime.

Just a Little Walk with Jesus invites you to experience the Lenten season-or any season of life-as a spiritual saunter. Rooted in the concept of walking with an open spirit toward the “Holy Land” (Sainte Terre), this devotional journey blends intentionality with serendipity, encouraging you to slow down, notice the wonders and beauties of life, and let your steps be guided by beauty and surprise.

Guided by the Gospel of Mark, which proclaims the good news of movement and the lively presence of God’s revelation, you will follow Jesus as he is constantly on the road, transforming lives through word, touch, and presence.

In a troubled time in the United States and the maelstrom of the twenty-first century, this journey addresses both personal and societal challenges. Through daily scripture and devotional readings, author Bruce G. Epperly invites you to deepen your connection with Jesus, who is presented as a companion, guide, and challenger.

Through the Lenten saunter, you will:

    • Discover who Jesus is but who we really are, claiming your vocation for just such a time as this.
    • Experience the Millisecond Coming, the moment-by-moment healing presence of Jesus in your daily life.
    • Align your steps with Jesus’ path of healing, wholeness, and prophetic ministry.
    • Move your spirits and expand the circumference of your compassion to embrace all creation.
    • Be inspired toward compassionate activism, resisting temptation and tyranny with courage and compassion.

The forty-one days are designed to guide you through reflection and temptation, culminating in the Empty Tomb and an Open Future. Let prayer and song be your guide on this pilgrim journey with Jesus, knowing that in the wilderness, Jesus is walking right beside us.

  • Justification

    Justification

What is justification in Christian thought and theology? What does this mean for our thinking and living? Is grace enough?

In Justification: By Grace Through Faith, Dr. Edward Vick looks at this with the eye of a biblical scholar, a theologian, and a philosopher, carefully discussing and integrating the various definitions to provide a precise depiction of the Christian doctrine of justification by grace through faith.

This book resulted from notes made for a seminary class many years ago, and as such it is designed to answer the questions that seeking minds and likely to want answered. Rather than simply proposing and defending a specific theory, you will find here a detailed discussion of the important elements of this doctrine.

Dr. Vick strives above all to center the discussion in Christ and to bring clarity by examining those issues that can distract a student, and dealing faithfully and fairly with various points of view.

This text will be valuable for any one, or any group, that wants to make a serious study of salvation and particularly the place of justification.

  • Keeping Up with Jesus

    Keeping Up with Jesus

What is a “narrative devotional commentary”? It’s a new way to gain insight into a Bible book with commentary that flows much like the source text.

For those who may have found the gospel of Mark less helpful than the other gospels or who have looked at it more as a collection of stories strung together in order to get us to the end of Jesus’ life, this commentary could be a breakthrough. Allan Bevere follows the story while at the same time bringing insight, both from historical sources and from the history and the faith of the Church. As he does so, the gospel of Mark comes alive as we learn to hear in these stories a connected story leading to who Jesus was, and then who Jesus is.

This short commentary avoids the pitfalls of enumerating dry details on the one hand, while also sticking to a serious, scholarly approach to the text. You can read clear, well-founded ideas about the text in a devotional way without the distraction of excessive notes or long, complex excurses.

This book is suitable for a popular audience who will be led to a more serious understanding of the gospel writers, of Jesus, and of the Gospel that they proclaimed. More scholarly readers will find it a good aid to meditation and to absorbing the devotional message of the text.

  • Kindness

    Kindness

Bullies may be younger than you think!

Bullies don’t all look like gang “thugs”. Some children may be on the receiving end of bullying in their homes and then act out their own aggression toward their classmates and local playmates.

Author Tamika Champion-Hampton deals with bullying in Kindness the sixth installment of the Kamden Faith Journey Series. She offers a real-life setting and hears not only the questions of Nana’s grandson but also those from Kamden’s friends and the bully himself.

This book would be an excellent introduction to a class on kindness, even with bullies, without forgetting the need to include parents and safety factors in such situations.

  • Letting Go

    Letting Go

We like our “stuff” around us. It makes us feel more calm and connected to our definition of “home”. And then God can step in and ask us to let something “GO!” It could be something as simple as letting go  or it could be a life-changing direction, ie, caring for a loved one. Am I willing to take God’s wisdom and follow His direction or am I convinced that I have the better plan; the better way?

Linda Estes brings her own experiences into the discussion including the difficult years of being treated for life-threatening heart disease and, most recently, the death of her husband and moving from their farm where dreams were dreamed and lost.

God did this according to His eternal plan. And He was able to do what He had planned because of all that our Savior Christ Jesus had done. Christ now gives us courage and confidence, so that we can come to God by faith.  – Ephesians 3:11-12(CEV)

  • Letting Go (Urdu)

    Letting Go (Urdu)

It’s hard to find time for a spiritual recharge in the morning, but Linda Estes is here again to help with her mastery of the one-minute devotional.

We like “our stuff,” don’t we? We hold tight to our material things, our dreams, and our plans for our lives. We have things all lined out in our heads and hearts. Things are going along just fine and then God interrupts our stuff. He asks us to let go of something, or someone, we love. When that happens, we have two choices. We can either go along with God’s plan or hang on to our own. Sometimes God asks us to let go of things simply to help us grow in our faith-walk with Him. Other times He asks us to let go so that He can do what Scripture tells us in Ephesians 3:20. God wants to “do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think.” Only when we are willing to let go of whatever God is asking of us, can He then bless our socks off. When we let God be God and surrender “our stuff” so He can carry out His plan for our lives, that’s when we really start living … God’s way. Linda’s prayer for you as you read these one-minute devotions is that they will help you find the freedom and blessings in letting go.

These books are for everyone who wants to start their day right with God, and make delightful gifts.

  • Long Shot

    Long Shot

The chance of playing on any Division 1 college basketball team … 1.3%. The chance of playing at your dream school … practically 0%.

It was a long shot to say the least. The road to Chapel Hill would begin early in Leah’s young life and be comprised of mountain-tops and valleys and sunshines and storms. The journey was one of the highest of highs and lowest of lows. It would be a path that tested, challenged and grew her faith.

The path to dreams is often found to have side paths and crossroads with different options. Unforeseen roadblocks can make navigation difficult, often trying your faith and testing your strength.

Leah kept going … and with God made the long shot. You will be encouraged and challenged by her testimony.
